Why I Love 3D Animation, and Why You Should Too
Making dinosaurs walk like in Jurassic Park was the start of Tony Sabo's career.
I was once asked by my college advisor what I wanted to major in. Many thoughts ran through my mind, but I always knew I had a creative brain. While growing up, I wanted this expensive construction set because I liked to build things from my imagination. We couldn’t afford expensive toys, so when I was six, I took over my entire living room and built my own construction set out of household tools and products. Building things out of my imagination was a dream come true as a child, but I had no idea how to apply that to the real world when I grew up.
The advisor then asked if I wanted to do something in the creative field. She asked me if I wanted to make soup can labels. Really? That is how you are going to sell a graphic designer position? I then asked her to challenge me and let her know my desire to build something from the depths of my creative mind. Boy, did she ever. She asked if I wanted to make dinosaurs walk like in the Jurassic Park movie. Cha-Ching!!!!
After getting my degree in Applied Arts and 3D Animation, I got a job with a company called Blue Lobster Multimedia Productions. Weird name, right? I spent a total of 5 years doing animation and noticed a trend: most companies did not see the value of 3D animation. I knew I had to learn another skill quickly to keep up when 3D work ran dry, so I chose to be a front-end web and Flash developer. This improved my coding skills, video editing, design, and motion graphics. Little did I know that this would improve my all-around skills for my future 3D work.
Over the years, I have faced many challenges that held me back from doing high-end animation, including limited client budgets, lack of access to render farms, and being the only one in my company with 3D skills. Most animation studios consist of a team of 20 employees or more. Job responsibilities include storyboarding, modeling, surfacing, lighting, character animation, motion capturing, and post-production editing. It takes a huge team and many years to produce a full-length film like the movie Toy Story. If I wanted to be successful and restart a 3D career in small-town Lansing, I had to take on all these responsibilities and become a one-man team.
About five years ago, I decided to go for it and resurrect my 3D skills. I asked my CEO John K. Addis if he would invest in me and help me create a 3D division at Addis Enterprises, and boy did it pay off. I implemented my design skills, video editing, and programming skills into my 3D projects. I’m very proud to be Creative Director as my primary role at AE, but I’ve also proud to have been able to produce dozens of high-end animations for our clients. From logo design to sports team introductions, architectural renders to brain animations, I love being able to make a simple vision into a 3D reality.
So why should you choose 3D? Well for starters, you won’t believe how adding something as simple as a 3D-animated logo can improve the professionalism of corporate videos. But the best part of 3D animation is that the sky really is the limit. If you envision a video with talking cows, try getting a real-life cow to say, "You’re a real showoff, Blaze.” In the world of 3D, anything is possible. This is where your concept and my imagination can come together to create something beautiful, engaging, and effective.
