Social media is loaded with misinformation. Online discussions are often angry and exhausting. Government decisions affect people’s rights, families, businesses, and communities, but understanding what happened, who represents you, and what to do next can feel impossible. Many people are left with two bad options: doomscroll until they’re frustrated or tune out completely.
While Americans have access to more information than ever before, many struggle to identify trustworthy sources, understand how government decisions affect their daily lives, or determine meaningful ways to participate in the democratic process. For younger generations in particular, civic education often ends when formal schooling does, leaving many adults feeling disconnected from the systems that shape their communities.
"We live in a world where almost every aspect of life has been made more accessible through technology," Addis said. "We can learn a language, track our fitness, manage our finances, or earn rewards through an app. Civic participation should be no different. If we want stronger communities and a healthier democracy, we need tools that meet people where they are."
A small internal innovation team at Addis Enterprises saw this as an opportunity to rethink how civic engagement could work in a digital world. Senior Engineer Anthony Hathaway pitched the initial concept of an app that gave you a shareable “wrapped” to track civic participation, and our development team spent more than a year researching civic education resources, voter engagement platforms, government data systems, and gamification models before bringing Zivic to market. Throughout development, the team focused on creating an experience that would be welcoming to first-time voters, lifelong participants, and everyone in between.
Zivic’s core free features include Daily Nectar, a bite-sized civic update of the day; ZivIQ, a five-question quiz that helps users build civic and news fluency; Federal Buzz, a plain-language summary of major national civic and government developments; glossaries and flashcards that allow users to test their knowledge; one-click contact tools for state and local representatives; voting information and alerts; and gamified progress tools, including points, streaks, and badges that reward users for learning, taking action, and staying engaged.
“For most people, the problem is not a lack of information,” Addis said. “It is that the information is scattered everywhere and rarely answers the real questions: What does this mean for me, my interests, my community, and the people who represent me?”
Unlike traditional news apps or government websites, Zivic is tailored to each user. Paid users gain access to additional features, including State Buzz and Local Buzz, along with deeper insight into how specific news items, legislation, and government actions may affect their personal interests.
Through Ask Vic, the app’s AI-powered civic assistant, users can get answers to questions about bills, public issues, elections, representatives, and current events, all designed around their unique location, interests, and context. And, just as Hathaway envisioned, each December the Zivic Wrapped feature will allow users to share that year’s civic engagement milestones with friends.
“Democracy has always required engagement,” Addis said. “Zivic just makes it playable.”
Zivic launched to the public on July 4, 2026. As the country celebrates 250 years of American history, Zivic is focused on helping people participate in what comes next.
